Plenković: Croatian IHRA presidency advanced the common mission of preserving the memory of the Holocaust

When it began its presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), Croatia clearly pointed out that, as the last witnesses of the Holocaust leave us, the whole world must decide what the future of global Holocaust remembrance, education and research will be without them, said Prime Minister Plenković today at the Zagreb IHRA Plenum.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković attended the opening of the Zagreb IHRA Plenary, which is held as part of the Croatian presidency of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA).
 
In his speech on that occasion, Prime Minister Plenković said that the choice of the Croatian State Archives as the venue for the Plenum perfectly symbolizes the topic on today's agenda and the IHRA Strategy: the preservation of testimonies about the Holocaust.
 
Pointing out that the chairmanship of the IHRA is of great importance for Croatia and its Government, the Prime Minister said that it had a strong influence, not only within Croatia as a catalyst for the national fight against anti-Semitism, but also more widely, on joint efforts aimed at the initiative on the future memories - "Future of Remembrance".
 
We strongly condemn Hamas' terrorist attack on Israel and support a solution that will bring lasting peace
 
The Prime Minister said that the brutal terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7 left its mark on the world.
 
He emphasized that the Croatian Government stands in solidarity with Israel, its close partner and one of the IHRA member states.
 
Croatia supports the efforts of the international community, which, while clearly condemning the terrorist attack by Hamas that caused the conflict, is actively seeking a solution that will bring lasting peace, ensure the release of all hostages, avoid further civilian casualties and ease the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, said Prime Minister Plenković.
 
The fight against anti-Semitism, for the preservation of testimonies and the suppression of distortion and revisionism
 
He reminded that Croatia, when it started its presidency of the IHRA, clearly pointed out that, as the last witnesses of the Holocaust are leaving us, the whole world must decide what the future of global Holocaust remembrance, education and research will be without them.
 
On this occasion, while the witnesses are still alive and active, it is our responsibility to ensure that their voices echo louder and inspire future generations, Prime Minister Plenković said.
 
Speaking about the basic principles that guided the Croatian presidency of the IHRA, he stated a clear vision, communication, consistency and dedication.
 
The future of remembrance, pointed out Prime Minister Plenković, requires that these four principles strengthen the IHRA, especially in its role to turn solidarity into a work that will respond to today's challenges: rapidly growing anti-Semitism, strengthening divisions and hatred.
 
He emphasized that the Croatian presidency encouraged cooperation between experts and the political level, strengthening IHRA's procedures and efficiency.
 
"This will bring us closer to a world that is ready to fight against anti-Semitism, against discrimination against the Roma and against the denial and distortion of the Holocaust and a world in which the memory of the Holocaust will continue for generations," said Prime Minister Plenković.
