Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković and Prime Minister Andrej Plenković on Sunday laid wreaths at the Altar of the Homeland on the occasion of Statehood Day, recalling the inauguration of the first multiparty parliament and the creation of the modern Croatian state.

"A thank-you to all Croatian defenders, the family members of killed defenders. A thank-you once again to all who built themselves into the Croatian freedom, independence and democracy we live in today," Jandroković said at Medvedgrad,

Plenković said there was synergy in the unforgettable moments of the creation of the Croatian state.

"Those moments were an unforgettable time, which happens in a unique period in the history of a people, and all of us who lived that must be proud to belong to the generation which had the honour to live in freedom and in its state."

The synergy in the creation of the Croatian state had three fundamental points, he said. "Firstly, the leading, visionary role of the first Croatian president, Franjo Tuđman; secondly, the unity of the Croatian people; and thirdly, without which there would be no freedom today, the courage and fearlessness of the Croatian people," Plenković said.
