Plenković on the Strategic Agenda of the EU: Focus on migration, cohesion, competitiveness, demography and enlargement

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković participated today in an informal meeting of the European Council in Granada, Spain, the key topics of which were the process of enlargement of the European Union and illegal migration. At the end of the meeting, he emphasized that the fundamental principle of the European Union enlargement process should be the individual merits of the aspirant countries.

European leaders also discussed the achievements from 2019 until today.
 
Prime Minister Plenković asserted that European Union responded to all the challenges to in a timely, comprehensive and strong manner.
 
Member states worked together to solve the health crisis, find a solution to the energy crisis, and flexibilize the rules at the EU level in order to enable governments to preserve social cohesion by unprecedentedly strong state interventions.
 
Among the main topics that the EU will deal with in the coming period are illegal migration, investment in defence capabilities and the issue of Union enlargement.
 
PM Plenković reiterated the position that the problem of illegal migration must be solved with the countries at the source and in transit. It is also necessary to strengthen the external borders of the European Union.
 
He stressed the importance of cooperation and coordination among member countries so that the Union would use all the mechanisms at its disposal to help countries that are at the source of migration. The priority is to strengthen institutions, reduce instability and help them function well.
