Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said on Monday after a meeting with representatives of the initiative #spasime (Save me) which is fighting domestic violence, that short-term measures would be introduced by the end of the year such as a hotline for victims of domestic violence as well safe houses in six counties that still do not have them, while medium-term measures envisage amendments to the law that will introduce stricter penalties.

The hotline will operate 24/7 and will be open to everyone, Plenkovic told reporters after the meeting.

A task force that will prepare amendments to legislation will include representatives of the #spasime initiative. The laws to be amended include the Penal Code, and the Law on the Protection against Domestic Violence, he added.

We will also strengthen the educational process, he said and added that children should learn from an early age that violence is unacceptable.

Justice Minister Drazen Bosnjakovic claimed that the penal policy is too lenient. Penalties need to be harsher, he said, we will increase the minimum sentence where we consider that to be necessary.
