Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic and Deputy Parliament Speaker Zeljko Reiner on Tuesday called on the youth to become actively involved in politics as well as in all other spheres of society so as to participate in decision making and in advancing Croatia in every area.

They were speaking at the first annual conference of the government's Council for the Youth, which brought together 150 members of the Council from county, municipal and city levels.

"In that way, they show responsibility, a desire for change, for learning and participating in decision making and in advancing Croatia in all areas," Plenkovic said.

The experiences they have as a generation born in the time of widespread internet, digital technology and modern communication give them an entirely different view of the world, events and social phenomena than his generation, he said.

It is important, however, that in such an extensive offer, young people make "good triage, have the right internal filters based on values, knowledge and education," he added.

"That's the key to your success and to managing in life, whatever you choose to do, because in the time of the fourth industrial revolution, this virtue will make you competitive," Plenkovic said, urging young people to "scratch below the surface", to find the right source of information and check it.

He said his government was oriented to solving the problems of young people who he sees as partners, adding that youth unemployment had been halved in recent years to "about 21,22, 23%, depending on the statistical methodology."

Plenkovic added that HRK 4.5 billion had been invested in active employment measures, many for the young entering the labour market, and underlined the importance of education.
