PM: Pejcinovic Buric's election as CoE Secretary General Croatia's great diplomatic success

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said on Wednesday evening that the election of Croatian Foreign and European Affairs Minister Marija Pejcinovic Buric as the new Secretary General of the Council of Europe was Croatia's biggest diplomatic success so far achieved in candidatures for the posts in international institutions as well as the confirmation of the country's strong position in foreign affairs.

The Parliamentary Assembly on Wednesday elected Pejcinovic Buric Secretary General of the Council of Europe for a five-year term beginning on 18 September 2019.

In the first round of the election the Croatian minister obtained 159 votes, an absolute majority, and the other shortlisted candidate Belgian Foreign Minister Didier Reynders won 105 votes. There were 264 votes cast.

The premier congratulated the Croatian candidate on her great result.
