Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic on Wednesday condemned the frequent threats against Croatian journalists on social media, saying they were bad for free speech and press freedom and that he expected such threats to be prosecuted in the most effective way.

"You have seen that the police, the Interior Ministry, are reacting to those threats. We think that's very bad for free speech and press freedom. Those are principles from which we don't depart by one iota and I expect such threats against journalists to be prosecuted in the most effective way," Plenkovic said at the start of a cabinet meeting.

He said politicians were sometimes victims of such threats and attacks too but that special sensitivity must be shown when it was about people who reported on all events in Croatia. "Everyone is entitled to a comment and an opinion and we will firmly stand by that. That's why I believe that these few cases will be prosecuted under the law."
