PM Sanader issues statement following arrests of Facebook activists

ZAGREB, Dec 3 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivo Sanader issued a statement on Wednesday following the recent arrests of Facebook activists who criticised or mocked the government, saying that no one in Croatia should be arrested for their views.

"Croatia is a democratic country of broad freedoms. Everything we have been through since 1990 gives us the right to expect that no one and nothing can challenge the freedom and democracy that we gained.

"No one should be detained or arrested in Croatia for expressing different views, just because they protest against or disagree with my policies or anyone else's. To defend this freedom is my main task as the Prime Minister. I have been doing that all along and will continue to do so in the future."

"This is not about this or that government or party, but about freedom -- freedom of thought, freedom of political conviction, and freedom of agreeing or disagreeing with a certain idea.

"That is why I have requested the Minister of the Interior and the Police Director to submit a report today on the latest events and arrests in Zagreb and Dubrovnik and to take appropriate steps if there were any omissions in police actions".
