PM Sanader meets rabbis

Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader on Monday received a delegation of rabbis led by Avraham Yafe-Schlesinger, the rabbi of Geneva's Machzikei synagogue and Jerusalem's Betzel Hachochma and head of the Burial and Cemeteries Department, the government's public relations office said in a statement.

The delegation included the Rabbi of the Jewish religious community "Bet Israel", Kotel Da-Don, Rabbi Yutzok Scotchet of London, Rabbi Yosef Kurnik of Brussels, Rabbi Levi Matusof of Milan, and Rabbi Pinchas Zaklos, head of the Jewish community "Chabad" from Croatia.

PM Sanader said he was glad that Zagreb's Jewish community Bet Israel on Sunday officially opened a synagogue in Zagreb after many years.

He added that Croatia had the obligation to build a new synagogue in Zagreb's Praska Street at the site of a synagogue that was destroyed by the WWII Ustasha regime.

The rabbis attending the meeting thanked the Croatian government for its efforts in promoting the quality of life of the Jewish community in Croatia.

Sanader said the government would continue to care for the Jewish community, the statement said.
