PM says Croatia wants western technology fighter jets

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said on Saturday Croatia still planned to modernise its air force, that its target was western technology aircraft, and that at the current Munich Security Conference Croatian representatives had talked with those of US manufacturer Lockheed Martin and Sweden's Saab.

Speaking for Croatian Television, Plenkovic said in Munich the aircraft Croatia had recently tried to buy was also western in technology and that Croatia used the opportunity at the conference to talk with representatives of Lockheed Martin and Saab.

He said they "are still interested, and in the weeks and months ahead we will see, based on our experience, how to embark on a new process which would make sure that, within a reasonable period of time, Croatia achieves what we want, which is to modernise our air force."

About ten days ago, after a purchase of Israeli F-16 fighter jets recently failed, Croatian Defence Minister Damir Krsticevic said he still maintained that Croatia needed multipurpose fighter jets and that which aircraft was chosen would be decided after an analysis of the failed attempt.
