PM visits flooded area

Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic on Sunday visited the flooded area of Sisak-Moslavina County, telling reporters the news was not good, that the population might even be evacuated, and that it was necessary to find a better model of flood protection .

He said the Croatian Waters company, the army, firemen and others "will do their best to normalise the situation." He said the question was whether there was enough money to invest in the infrastructure or if the population should be evacuated and then compensated for the damage.

Milanovic said a lot was being "invested in protection from waters but it still isn't enough. It's more cost-efficient to build embankments there where more people are endangered."

He said the problem sometimes was not in money but in the public procurement process.

Asked by the press if now was the right time for the state to buy a large number of new vehicles for the government and parliament, Milanovic said: "I don't know who's buying and deciding in which car they will ride."
