Swoboda, Schmitt congratulate Sanader on forming new government

ZAGREB, Jan 21 (Hina) - A members of the European Parliament and rapporteur for Croatia, Hannes Swoboda, on Monday sent a letter to Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader congratulating him on a vote of confidence in his government, expressing readiness to continue to cooperate with the new Croatian government.

Swoboda also said he hoped the European Parliament would support support Croatia's agreement on joining the EU before it is dissolved in 2009.

The chairman of the joint Croatia-EU parliamentary committee Pal Schmitt, also hailed te forming of the new Croatian government and supported the continuation and conclusion of Croatia's EU entry talks.

He underlined that the EPP-ED Group strongly supported the latest European Parliament's report on Croatia and that he also supported Croatia's efforts to wrap up its EU membership talks before the European Parliament is dissolved in June 2009.

Plenković and Merz: In uncertain global circumstances, we are strengthening the partnership between Croatia and Germany

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković met today in Berlin with the Federal Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, with whom he discussed bilateral relations, strengthening economic cooperation and the procurement of 44 Leopard tanks, the most modern tanks available on the market. They also discussed key topics for the future of the European Union in view of the meeting of the European Council, finding a solution for further financial support to Ukraine, as well as international efforts to achieve a lasting and just peace in that country.

Economic forum is a strong contribution to the further strengthening of Croatian-German relations

During the visit of Prime Minister Andrej Plenković to Germany, the Croatian-German Economic Forum was held, with the aim of further strengthening relations between Croatia and its most important foreign trade partner, with the participation of around forty Croatian companies. At the opening of the Forum, Prime Minister Plenković presented the most important Croatian economic indicators and achievements to German businessmen and invited them to invest in Croatia. He expressed his hope that today's Forum would contribute to strengthening existing and creating new partnerships, emphasizing that the Government would be available to everyone in this context and provide assistance within its powers.

Plenković and Macron: We continue to strengthen the Croatian-French partnership, European resilience and competitiveness

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković met tonight, in the Elysee Palace, with the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, at whose invitation he is on a two-day official visit to Paris. After the meeting, the Action Plan for the implementation of the Croatian-French Strategic Partnership, the Contract for the procurement of Caesar self-propelled howitzers and the Letter of Intent on the procurement of improved Rafale aircraft capabilities were signed. "We continue to strengthen the Croatian-French partnership. The goal of these activities is also complementarity with strengthening European resilience and competitiveness, as well as preserving the common values on which the European Union rests," it was said after the meeting.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković today gave a lecture at the French Institute for International Relations entitled "Europe at the Crossroads: Asserting Sovereignty in a Changing World". He said that the international order is undergoing a profound transformation, European security is at risk, and some of the foundations of transatlantic relations have been undermined. "We can no longer take for granted the institutional, energy or demographic stability of our societies, and investments in defense are a priority for the European continent", the Prime Minister stressed. Speaking about the war in Ukraine, he stressed perseverance in efforts to achieve a just and sustainable peace that respects Ukrainian sovereignty, territorial integrity and will provide Ukraine with lasting security guarantees.
