He declined to say who was to blame for the situation in the countries from which waves of refugees were fleeing and heading towards the EU, notably Germany and Scandinavian countries.
Tusk also stressed he was looking forward to a constructive cooperation with Croatia regarding the response to the migrant crisis. He confirmed that he and Milanovic talked about the ways of how to help countries that are hardest hit by the influx of migrants and refugees who are on their way to destination countries,
The Croatian PM said the migrant and refugee crisis was "a painful and exhausting topic which demands a precise and clear response, adding however he did not see a threat in that crisis.
EU ministers of the interior will convene for an extraordinary summit in mid-September to discuss future steps regarding the crisis, Tusk said.
He added it was the EU's responsibility to assist Western Balkan countries on their path to a greater stability and prosperity. Underscoring that enlargement continues to be the greatest guarantee for the promotion of our values, Tusk said the EU will continue to assist countries in the region on their European path.
