INFORMAL EUROPEAN COUNCIL MEETING

Transatlantic ties are backbone of modern world and international organizations, it is important to strengthen dialogue

The meeting in Brussels is taking place after the World Economic Forum in Davos, and will discuss relations between the EU and the US in light of all recent developments.

Transatlantic ties are backbone of modern world and international organizations, it is important to strengthen dialogue
"Our message has been very clear, solidarity with Denmark regarding Greenland and the protection of their sovereignty, but at the same time to encourage efforts for dialogue between the US and NATO and the members of the European Union," said Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, emphasizing that transatlantic ties were the backbone of building the modern world, including international organizations in the period after World War II, and that it is very important to find solutions for the sometimes different viewpoints that burden us.

After Trump's speech in Davos, the situation regarding Greenland de-escalated

He referred to President Trump's speech yesterday, after which, Plenković pointed out, the situation regarding Greenland immediately de-escalated.

He assessed that the efforts of a narrow circle of interlocutors, which also included the NATO Secretary General, to ensure that all Western allies present in the Arctic achieve a certain multilateral engagement in order to strengthen the security of that area, contributed to calming tensions and organizing cooperation, first of all those countries that are in that area, and then with the support of all other NATO allies.

He also discussed this with the NATO Secretary General when he was in Zagreb about ten days ago, and tonight, an attempt will be made in a broad discussion to see how to manage transatlantic relations in the years ahead.

Tonight's informal summit was called last weekend, following US threats to seize Greenland and impose tariffs on European countries that opposed it, which President Donald Trump has since withdrawn.

President Trump took not one, but two steps back, he said there would be no tariffs and that he would not use force and that he was ready for an agreement that would satisfy him and other partners, said Plenković.

Grateful for US invitation to the Board of Peace, but it needs to be discussed

When asked whether Croatia would join the Board of Peace, the Prime Minister said that he was grateful for the US invitation to participate in it, but that in the Croatian legal order it is not possible to immediately sign something that arrived the day before yesterday.

“Just as we could not, most other EU members could not either, and today we will see what the positions of our colleagues are,” he said.

EU leaders will discuss the possibility of provisional application of the trade agreement with the South American bloc Mercosur at the summit, after the European Parliament postponed its ratification yesterday.

“I think that this scenario is likely and that provisional application will occur,” says Plenković.
