Croatia to launch new stage of lifting of COVID measures

The head of Zagreb's Fran Mihaljevic Hospital for Infectious Diseases, Alemka Markotic said on Sunday that caution was still needed, although a new stage of easing COVID-19 restrictive measures would soon ensue.

"Good statistics we have now can soon turn other way but we can also bring the figures to zero and enjoy the summer. We cannot reduce our vigilance as long as all other countries are not free of the virus. It is still important to protect ourselves and take care of our dearest ones and people in our surrounding," Markotic said.

Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic said that in the next round of the relaxation of containment measures, children's playgrounds could be reopened.

Also, the authorities are considering to raise the allowable number of guests at weddings and funerals. 

The latest one-digit numbers of new infections are the reason for satisfaction, and the last cases have been family contacts and one imported case from Germany, the Croatian coronavirus crisis management team said.

8 new infections, 2 deaths in last 24 hours, 1,489 recoveries since start of epidemic

Eight new coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Croatia in the last 24 hours and two more people have died, the national coronavirus crisis management team told a daily press conference on Sunday.

The total number of positive cases now stands at 2,096.

Croatia's death toll has risen to 79, Health Minister Vili Beros said, adding that a woman born in 1924 had died in a hospital in Split and a man born in 1950 had died in a hospital in Zagreb.

There are currently 15 patients on ventilators, out of 231 who are being treated in hospitals.

Since the outbreak of the disease, 38,084 people have been tested, including 527 in the last 24 hours. Currently, the percentage of tests coming back positive stands at 5.50%.

The number of people who have recovered now stands at 1,489.

Minister Beros called again for caution in the coming days, warning that there is a thin line between good and bad results in the fight against this pandemic.
