Government sends bill on nature protection to parliament

The government on Thursday forwarded to parliamentary procedure a bill on nature protection which should improve the system of nature protection and align it with European Union directives.

Environment and Nature Protection Minister Mihael Zmajlovic said that the most important improvements would be to identify, proclaim and preserve nature protected regions and regulate their management.

The improvements clearly determine categories of protected areas of state and local significance as well as facilitating the possibility for the government to form a public institution to manage more than one national or nature park.

Future annual plans and programme too will only be adopted after being approved by the ministry and local government.

Ahead of the government's meeting, Minister Zmajlovic said speculation about the sale of the Brijuni Riviera company was misinformation. In response to reporters' questions o the matter, he said the Riviera would not be sold but a more efficient management system would be emplaced for such an enormous tourism resource keeping in mind conditions relating to nature protection.

The government also adopted a decision to service the debts of 25 state-owned health institutions totalling 1.133 billion kuna.
