PM receives French economist Thomas Piketty

Prime Minister Zoran Milanovic on Thursday received French economist Thomas Piketty, the author of the globally successful academic study "Capital in the Twenty-first Century" which emphasises the themes of his work on wealth concentrations and distribution over the past 250 years.

Milanovic and Piketty discussed the book which has received great attention around the world and which points to huge inequality in the distribution of wealth in the modern world. Piketty proposes redistribution through a progressive global tax on wealth.

The two spoke about the global financial crisis and possible solutions which Piketty presents in his work, the prime minister's office said in a press release.

Later in the day Piketty held a lecture at Zagreb's Croatian National Theatre where he presented and discussed his book.

During the lecture Piketty said that the euro area required democratic governance concerning the deficit level if the European Union wished to continue with the single currency - the euro.

Piketty's visit is part of the "Rendez-Vous" festival of French culture, which is set to begin on May 5 with an exhibition of the works of Auguste Rodin. The festival will present more than 150 events around the country and will continue until September.

Thomas Piketty was born on 7 May 1971, in the Parisian suburb of Clichy, Hauts-de-Seine. He is one of the most reputable economists from the Paris School of Economics. The book "Capital in the Twenty-first Century" is his twelfth work. The book was published in Croatia by the Profil publishing house and was translated from French by Natasa Desnica-Zerjavic.
