PM says necessary to draw up firefighting plan for 2018 by year's end

This year's firefighting season in Croatia was one of the worst yet, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said on Monday, adding that it was critical to draw up a firefighting plan for 2018 by the end of this year.

We have identified certain problems that need to be dealt with and it is critical that we use the next two or three months to draw up plans for the 2018 season, based on the past experience, the PM said after a meeting in the Firefighting Centre in Divulje, near the southern coastal city of Split.

Plenkovic rejected claims by reporters that there were no concrete measures following the summer wildfires, saying that today's meeting focused on the entire firefighting season in detail and that the government had taken measures.

He also said that unfortunately a large number of fires this summer were planted and that it was the responsibility of the police to identify perpetrators, saying that this would prevent those with similar plans in the future from planting fires.

Commenting on the damage caused by wildfires this summer, Plenkovic said data were still being collected.
