President, PM meet firefighters' delegation on International Firefighters Day

On the occasion of International Firefighters Day, which is observed on St Florian's Day, May 4, President Zoran Milanovic met with a delegation of the Croatian Firefighters Association, thanking firefighters for everything they do for citizens, including their assistance after the March 22 quake in Zagreb.

Chief firefighting commander Slavko Tucakovic informed the president about the new organisational structure of the Croatian Firefighters Association, with the association having been transformed, for the first time, into a body of public administration located in a single place.

Tucakovic said that the new organisational structure also included the main staff, which he assessed as very good, as evidenced by more than 4,800 interventions by firefighters after the March 22 quake in Zagreb, as well as their engagement in the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic today met with representatives of the Croatian Firefighters Association, thanking them for their selfless work in putting out fires and helping remove the damage caused by the Zagreb earthquake, the government said in a statement earlier in the day.

Plenkovic said that his government would continue improving the firefighting system.

Firefighters' representatives expressed satisfaction with the new law on firefighting.

The government has reorganised the Croatian Firefighters Association into the Central State Firefighting Office as firefighters are one of the key components of the system of public security, homeland security and national security, it was said at the meeting.

The homeland security system is fully ready for this year's wildfire season, the government said in a statement.
