Vaccination by mobile teams started on Monday morning in Pitomača, Virovitica-Podravina County, with Health Minister Vili Beroš and Croatian Public Health Institute head Krunoslav Capak attending.

During the day, a COVID-19 bus will visit six communities in the county and more than 40 places by the end of next week.

Problems with interest in vaccination are not expected as local residents were queuing in front of the bus to get vaccinated but Beroš and Capak were nonetheless cautious in their answers when asked if Croatia would manage to achieve the desired vaccination rate of 55% by the end of June.

The plan is to have 55% of adults vaccinated by the end of June and the national average now is 42%, Capak said, adding that more than 400,000 people should receive their first shot in the next two weeks.

"There is a sufficient quantity of vaccines, and we are trying to attract as many people as possible with innovative approaches and campaigns," said Capak.

Minister Beroš said that it was clear that vaccination would not stop at the end of June and that it would continue throughout the summer.

"The figures we have mentioned are more for orientation purposes, more important than them are the figures we will be recording in the autumn, when we will know the vaccination rate. Let's hope that we will all be aware of the need to achieve that goal because that is how we can prevent the virus from spreading further," Beroš said, adding that according to information from the field, people living in rural areas were getting vaccinated more than those living in urban centres.
