Advancing economy, catching up with developed EU members

Prime Minister Andrej Plenković said that 30 years since its international recognition, Croatia had accomplished all strategic national goals - having joined the EU and NATO and having come close to joining the Schengen area of passport-free travel and the euro area.

This summer the Pelješac Bridge, connecting the southernmost peninsula of Pelješac with the mainland, will be officially inaugurated as well, he added.

In the fourth decade of its independence, Croatia's goals are economic progress, better living standards, even development and catching up with developed EU countries, he said.

Asked about the indictment against Croatian pilots, PM Plenković reiterated that "Croatia has all the mechanisms to protect its pilots in legal proceedings."

Commenting on the fact that President Zoran Milanović did not attend today's wreath-laying ceremony, Plenković said that everyone should respect Statehood Day based on the law adopted by the parliament.

On Sunday evening, a concert was held at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb on the occasion of Statehood Day and the 30th anniversary of Croatia's international recognition.

Attending the event were 500 guests, incumbent and former officials, including Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandroković, former presidents  Kolinda Grabar Kitarović, Stjepan Mesić and Ivo Josipović, parliamentary deputies, ministers, Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević, representatives of the academic community and diplomatic corps, as well as other domestic and foreign guests.
