PLENKOVIĆ TO CNN

The partnership between the US and Europe is the only long-term solution

In an interview with CNN in Davos, Prime Minister Andrej Plenković commented on President Trump's address during the Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum, relations between the European Union and the US, the economic situation in Croatia and EU enlargement.

The partnership between the US and Europe is the only long-term solution
Answering the question about the weakening of unity within the NATO alliance, Plenković pointed out that the strong transatlantic alliance needs to be renewed. He reminded that in the past, loyalty and solidarity within the framework of NATO had been expressed several times.

He doesn’t see that today would be any different, that is, that today's leaders would not equally come to each other's aid.

It is necessary to calm the relations between the USA and European partners and return to the foundations on which the free world was created after 1945, because the transatlantic partnership is their backbone, said Prime Minister Plenković.

The second term of President Trump, Prime Minister Plenković said, is more assertive when it comes to the methodology of protecting American interests in international relations, but he sees no other long-term solution than the partnership between the USA and Europe, which is crucial.

Croatia achieves stable economic growth

Speaking about the economic situation in Croatia, the Prime Minister highlighted positive economic trends.

''For 19 consecutive quarters, the economy has been growing continuously, we have achieved an investment credit rating of level A, high employment and low unemployment, and average salaries and pensions are also growing,'' said Plenković.

Geopolitical approach to EU enlargement

Regarding Croatia's position on EU enlargement, the Prime Minister said that the previous approach to enlargement was generally based on the achievements of each candidate country, and today there is increasing talk of a geopolitical approach that would enable faster access, especially for Ukraine.
Such an approach, he added, will depend on the speed of the peace agreement in Ukraine.

If this were to happen in the case of Ukraine, he added, then such an approach should also be applied to the countries of Southeast Europe, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is particularly important to Croatia given that Croats are one of the three constituent peoples.

Asked by host Richard Quest to write on the board a word that would be the answer to the question "What gives you hope in the face of numerous global challenges", Prime Minister Plenković wrote "common sense".
