PM attends Korcula Town Council meeting
Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic attended a Korcula Town Council meeting on the occasion of Town Day on Monday, saying that this town on the southern Adriatic island of the same name had always been attractive and open and that many of its residents had made their contribution to Croatia's development.
Plenkovic said that the excellent cooperation with the Dubrovnik-Neretva County administration and the central government was the key for the town's prosperity. He said that the local and central governments were working on improving living standards on the island, transport connectivity, investment and tourism, notably cultural heritage.
The PM said that the completed work on the wharf in the ferry port of Dominca was an example of how his government was working on improving the transport connectivity and development of the islands, notably Korcula.
"The agreements signed today for Puntin and Vela Luka are co-financed by the EU with 85%. Such road and port infrastructure projects were made possible thanks to government decisions. And of course, the construction of the Peljesac Bridge and roads on the Peljesac peninsula will give a new dimension to life and boost tourism on the island of Korcula," Plenkovic said.
The Mayor of Korcula, Andrija Fabris, said that the new Islands Act was the right way to preserve life and resources on the Croatian Adriatic islands. He said that Korcula had already prepared itself for projects that would follow the completion of the Peljesac Bridge.
The agreement for the reconstruction of the Puntin pier in Korcula is worth HRK 10.5 million and the agreement for the construction of the port terminal in Vela Luka is worth HRK 111.2 million.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Plenkovic said that the two agreements were proof of how EU membership was helping in developing the islands and improving their connections with the mainland.
The Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Oleg Butkovic, said that HRK 700 million was available for such projects and more agreements would be signed by the end of the year in all seven coastal counties. He said that 85 percent of funds were provided by the EU and the remaining 15 percent by his ministry.
